RECOGNISE MINE WARNING SIGNS

Normally the person who lays a landmine does not leave a clear sign to indicate the presence of the mine, but someone else may leave a temporary sign as a warning to others of the danger. People should be aware of the most common types of warning signs used in the area in which they live and work.

It is important to note and to emphasise that the lack of clear warning signs does not mean that an area is safe. People sometimes remove minefield-warning signs without considering the effect on others. Children and adults need be told not to remove mine waming signs, and they need to be told why this is so important.

Main Points:
  • Be aware of the usual form of warning signs, you must assume that the area is mined. You must go back the wayyou came and find an alternative, safer route.
  • Do not remove mine warning signs from the area.
  • If there is no warning sign, do not assume that the area is safe.
